Winter Hair Damage Advice

DRYHAIRPICMost think that the humid summer months are the worst for hair care; however, winter comes with its own set of weather-induced frustrations, like dullness, breakage, and staticky locks.

Here are some solutions to your dreary winter-hair woes;

  1. Staticky hair?

    Static happens when your hair picks up an electrical charge from the dry air. It’s more common in the chillier months because the air is dry, cold and less moist.

How to fix it: Try a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. If this does not work, then you may need a little more help. Try using an anti-frizz cream or leave in conditioning spray (but avoid any alcohol based products because they typically dry out your hair.

Fun Fact: Carry around a dryer sheet with you for touch ups throughout the day. These sheets help reduce static.

  1. Flaky scalp?

    Changes in humidity during winter months can cause your scalp to flake, creating a flaky dandruff and itchy scalp.

How to fix it: Try using a rich, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. This should help bring moisture back to your skin, causing flakes to disappear and itching to calm down.

Fun Fact: There are signs (other than the obvious) that you most likely have dandruff. If you have a super dry face and if spots that used to be oily, like your T zone, now feel tight, your scalp is also dehydrated and may start to peel.

  1. Dull and dry hair?

    Dry hair and windy days can cause damage to your hair cuticles, taking away its brightness.

How to fix it: Try shampooing every day.  Look for ingredients like B5 and panthenol, which smooth the cuticle. If you are big on flat ironing, drying or curling your hair with hot tools, mist your brush/tools with a nourishing heat-protectant spray to fend off dryness.

Fun Fact: If you rub olive oil on the plates of your straightening iron once a week, your hair will get less fried than if you didn’t!
